How to Make Your Nails Last Longer on Holiday

There's nothing worse than spending time and money getting your holiday nails absolutely perfect… only to have a nail start lifting halfway through your trip.
Whether you're heading abroad, enjoying a UK staycation or simply making the most of summer in Devon, your nails can be exposed to a lot more than they are during your normal routine.
Swimming. Sun cream. Sea water. Luggage. Airport security. Long days out. And, of course, the temptation to use your nails to open absolutely everything.
So, how do you make your nails last longer on holiday?
As a nail technician serving clients across Torbay, Paignton, Torquay and Brixham, I'm going to break down exactly what can affect nail retention and what you can do to give your manicure the best possible chance of staying beautiful throughout your trip.

1. Choose the Right Nail Treatment Before You Go
One of the biggest mistakes I see is treating every holiday manicure as though the same nail system will work for everyone.
It won't.
The best treatment depends on your natural nails, lifestyle, desired length and the condition of your nails.
For some clients, a BIAB overlay can provide additional structure and support to the natural nail.
For others, gel polish may be perfectly suitable.
And if you're looking for additional length or a particular shape, an enhancement such as acrylic or Gel X may be more appropriate.
The important thing isn't simply choosing whatever treatment is trending.
It's choosing the treatment that's appropriate for your nails and what you're going to be doing on holiday.
That's something I can help you decide during your appointment.
2. Don't Leave Your Appointment Until the Last Minute
If you're flying on Saturday, getting your nails done on Friday night isn't necessarily your best option.
I generally recommend allowing a little time between your appointment and your holiday.
Why?
It gives you the opportunity to notice if there's an issue with a nail before you travel.
It also means you're not rushing straight from the salon into packing, travelling and dealing with luggage.
Ideally, your nails should be looking fresh and beautifully finished when you leave — rather than being an afterthought squeezed into an already hectic day.
If you've got a holiday booked, plan your nail appointment into your travel schedule rather than trying to fit it in at the last minute.
3. Proper Nail Preparation Matters
Long-lasting nails don't start with the colour.
They start with proper preparation.
Before applying gel, BIAB or another enhancement system, the natural nail needs to be appropriately prepared.
This includes things such as:
Preparing the nail plate correctly
Removing unwanted cuticle from the nail plate
Ensuring the nail is clean and dry
Choosing suitable products
Applying the product correctly
Ensuring the product is properly cured
Poor preparation can contribute to lifting and premature wear.
This is one of the reasons why professional application matters.
A beautiful colour is only part of a good manicure. The preparation and application underneath it are just as important.
4. Be Careful With Water
Here's one that surprises people.
Water itself doesn't automatically ruin your manicure, but repeated or prolonged exposure to water can affect the natural nail and contribute to problems with your enhancement or polish.
On holiday, you might be swimming every day, spending hours in the sea or pool, showering more frequently and washing your hands constantly.
That's a lot more exposure than your nails might normally experience.
You don't need to avoid the water - that's hardly realistic on holiday!
But try to avoid keeping your hands submerged unnecessarily for long periods and make sure you dry your hands properly afterwards.
5. Don't Pick or Peel Your Nails
This is probably one of the biggest pieces of advice I can give you.
If you notice a tiny bit of lifting, don't pick it.
And definitely don't peel the product away yourself.
Picking or peeling can take layers of the natural nail with it, potentially leaving your nails thinner and more vulnerable.
Instead, contact your nail technician if you have a problem.
A small issue can often be dealt with much more safely than leaving it until the entire enhancement has lifted.
6. Cuticle Oil Is Your Holiday Best Friend
If there's one thing I'd recommend packing alongside your sunscreen, it's cuticle oil.
✨
Regular use of cuticle oil helps keep the skin around your nails conditioned and supports good nail care.
It's particularly useful when you're exposed to:
Sun
Salt water
Chlorinated water
Air conditioning
Frequent hand washing
Apply it to the cuticles and surrounding skin regularly, particularly before bed.
And yes, you can take it on holiday with you.
Your future self will thank you.
7. Be Careful With Sunscreen
Sunscreen is obviously essential - especially when you're spending more time outdoors.
But don't forget your hands.
Apply sunscreen generously and regularly, and wash or wipe your hands when appropriate if there's excess product sitting around the nails.
The bigger issue is actually the combination of sun, water, products and general holiday wear and tear, rather than sunscreen alone.
Your nails are part of your skin and deserve some attention too.
8. Stop Using Your Nails as Tools
I know.
You're on holiday.
You've got a suitcase that won't close, a stubborn drinks can, a luggage tag that won't open and approximately seventeen tiny plastic packages that apparently require industrial machinery to get into.
But please don't use your nails as tools.
Using your nails to:
Open cans
Scrape surfaces
Open packaging
Pick at things
Pry objects apart
can put unnecessary stress on the natural nail and enhancement.
Use your fingers to look pretty. Use an actual tool to open things.
Your nails will thank you.
9. Pack a Small Nail Care Kit
You don't need to take your entire salon with you.
A small holiday nail-care kit is enough.
I'd recommend packing:
Cuticle oil
A suitable nail file
Hand cream
Your usual nail-care products
If a nail catches slightly, gently file the edge rather than biting, tearing or pulling it.
And if you experience significant lifting, breakage or discomfort, don't attempt a DIY repair with household glue.
Get professional advice instead.
10. Think About Your Holiday Activities
Your holiday plans should influence your nail choice.
Going somewhere for a relaxing week by the pool?
You might choose something completely different from someone going backpacking, rock climbing or spending two weeks doing water sports.
Think about what your hands are realistically going to be doing.
If your holiday involves lots of physical activity, shorter nails may be a more practical option.
If you're mainly relaxing, sightseeing and enjoying restaurants, you might have more flexibility with your length and design.
The best holiday nails aren't necessarily the longest or most elaborate. They're the ones that work with your lifestyle.
11. Don't Forget Your Natural Nails
It's easy to think about your manicure purely in terms of how long it looks good.
But as a professional nail technician, I'm much more interested in what is happening underneath.
Your natural nails matter.
That's why correct application, regular maintenance and responsible removal are so important.
If your nails have been repeatedly lifting or breaking, don't simply keep applying another set without addressing the underlying issue.
Sometimes your nail technician may recommend changing your treatment, length or maintenance routine.
That's not about stopping you from having beautiful nails.
It's about helping you have beautiful nails that are appropriate for you.
12. Book Your Holiday Nails at the Right Time
If you're travelling, don't leave your appointment until the last minute.
I'd recommend booking in advance - particularly during busy summer periods.
Summer is one of the busiest times of year for nail technicians because everyone suddenly wants:
☀️ Holiday nails
💖 Wedding nails
🌸 Festival nails
✨ Chrome nails
💅 Fresh BIAB sets
And appointments can disappear quickly.
If you already know your holiday dates, book your nail appointment around them rather than waiting until your suitcase is packed.
So, What Are the Best Holiday Nails?
There's no single answer.
For some clients, a BIAB manicure with a simple colour will be perfect.
For others, gel polish offers exactly what they need.
And if you're looking for length, structure or a particular design, another enhancement system may be more appropriate.
The key is matching the treatment to your natural nails, your lifestyle and your holiday plans.
That's much more useful than simply asking, "Which nails last the longest?"

Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I get my nails done before a holiday?
Ideally, plan your appointment around your travel date rather than leaving it until the last minute. Booking a few days before travelling gives you time to identify and address any issues before you go.
Are BIAB nails good for holidays?
BIAB can be a good option for clients who want additional structure and support for their natural nails. However, whether BIAB is appropriate depends on the individual client's nails, lifestyle and desired result.
Can I swim with gel or BIAB nails?
Yes, you can swim while wearing properly applied gel or BIAB nails. However, frequent or prolonged exposure to water can contribute to wear, so good aftercare and drying your hands thoroughly are important.
Does sun cream damage gel nails?
Sunscreen does not automatically damage gel nails, but holiday conditions involve a combination of sun, water, skincare products and increased activity. Good hand and nail hygiene can help keep your manicure looking its best.
What should I do if my nail starts lifting on holiday?
Don't pick or peel the product away. If possible, contact your nail technician for advice. If you experience pain, swelling or other concerning symptoms, seek appropriate professional advice rather than attempting a DIY repair.
What are the best nails for a beach holiday?
The best option depends on your natural nails and what you'll be doing. A well-maintained BIAB or gel manicure can be suitable for many clients, while shorter lengths may be more practical for particularly active holidays.
