Chrome nails: Styles, Ideas and Everything You Need To Know
Updated: Sep 13
Chrome nails aren't exactly subtle.
Even the softer finishes catch the light, change as you move your hands and somehow make a simple manicure look completely different.
And they've become a firm favourite at my nail desk in Paignton. ✨
The brilliant thing about chrome is that it isn't actually one single “look”. It can be soft and pearly, glossy and glazed, bright and colourful or full-on metallic.
You can wear it across every nail, add it to a French tip or use just a little chrome as part of your nail art.
So if you've saved a chrome nail photo but have absolutely no idea what to ask for at your appointment, this guide is for you.
Let's look at the different types of chrome nails, how the finish is created and how to find the right chrome look for you.

What are chrome nails?
Chrome nails get their reflective finish from a fine chrome powder that's applied over cured gel product.
But here's the interesting bit: the chrome powder isn't the only thing determining the final colour.
The base underneath matters too.
The same chrome effect can look completely different over a milky white, soft pink, nude, black or bright coloured base.
Depending on the combination we choose, chrome can create:
A soft glazed finish
A pearlescent shine
A metallic mirror effect
An iridescent shimmer
A much bolder coloured finish
That's why bringing an inspiration photo to your appointment is useful. “I want chrome” can mean several very different things!
Why are chrome nails so popular?
I think a big part of chrome's popularity comes down to how adaptable it is.
Two clients can both ask me for chrome and leave with completely different nails.
If you normally love neutral manicures, we can create a subtle pearl or glazed finish over a soft base.
If subtle isn't really your thing, we can use bright colours, stronger metallic effects or chrome nail art instead.
And if you want something in the middle, chrome French tips give you the reflective finish without covering the entire nail.
It's less about one specific chrome trend and more about finding the version that suits your style.
The Most Popular Chrome Nail Styles
Glazed Chrome

If you want chrome without going full mirror-ball, this is a great place to start.
Glazed chrome usually combines a soft nude, pink or milky base with a delicate chrome finish over the top.
The result is glossy and reflective without feeling too bold, which makes it an easy choice if you normally prefer natural-looking nails but want something a little more special.
It also works beautifully over a BIAB base if BIAB is the right treatment for your natural nails.
Pearl Chrome

Pearl chrome has a softer, more luminous finish – think pearly rather than metallic.
It's particularly lovely for:
Weddings
Holidays
Bridal nails
Special occasions
Anyone who wants something neutral with a little more going on
The base colour can make a surprisingly big difference, so we can adjust the finished effect depending on whether you want warm, cool, pink or milky tones.
Chrome French Tips

Chrome French tips take the basic idea of a French manicure and replace the traditional white tip with a reflective chrome finish.
They can be subtle with a fine pearl tip or much bolder with silver, gold or coloured chrome.
I particularly like this option if you love the chrome trend but don't necessarily want it across the whole nail.
And yes – they can work on shorter nails too. We simply adapt the width and shape of the tip to suit the nail we're working with.
Coloured Chrome

This is where chrome gets properly fun 💖
Instead of sticking to pearl, silver or neutral finishes, we can use colour to create a much bolder effect.
Think:
Pink chrome
Electric blue
Lavender
Rose gold
Bright green
Deep red
Almost anything else we can make work with the base and chrome combination
This is where bringing inspiration photos really helps, because the colour underneath can completely change the finished result.
Chrome nail ideas for summer
Chrome is particularly fun in summer because we can play with brighter bases, pearly holiday finishes and reflective details.
Some ideas to save for your next summer appointment:
Pearl chrome over milky white
Pink or coral chrome
Blue chrome
Chrome French tips
Bright chrome feature nails
Mermaid-inspired chrome

Can you have chrome over BIAB?
Yes – chrome can look beautiful over BIAB.
The important thing to understand is that BIAB and chrome are doing different jobs.
BIAB can be used to add structure and support to your natural nails, while chrome creates the reflective finish you see on top.
So you don't need to choose between “having BIAB” and “having chrome”.
If BIAB is suitable for your natural nails, we can create the structured base first and then use chrome as part of the finished design.
Not sure whether you actually need BIAB? Read my guide to gel vs BIAB nails before your appointment.
How long do chrome nails last?
Chrome is part of the finished design rather than a completely separate nail system, so how your manicure wears depends heavily on what's underneath it.
Your natural nails, the treatment you've chosen, application, lifestyle and aftercare can all affect retention.
To look after your chrome manicure:
Use cuticle oil regularly
Avoid picking or peeling product
Wear gloves for cleaning and household jobs
Don't use your nails as tools
Attend your recommended maintenance appointments
If you want to give your manicure the best chance of wearing well, I've written a complete guide to making your nails last longer.
Which chrome nail style should you choose?
If you've decided you want chrome but still have 47 screenshots saved, here's how I'd narrow it down.
If you normally wear neutral nails:
Start with pearl or glazed chrome over a soft pink, nude or milky base.
If you love French nails:
Try chrome tips instead of traditional white.
If you want something bold:
Choose coloured chrome or a stronger metallic effect.
If you want holiday nails:
Pearl, bright colours and ocean-inspired chrome all work beautifully.
If you want something completely unique:
Use chrome as part of your nail art rather than across the entire nail.
And if you're still not sure, bring your screenshots. Often I can work out the common thread between the sets you've saved and help you turn that into a design that works for your own nails.
Can you have chrome on short nails?
Absolutely.
Chrome isn't reserved for long almond extensions.
A glazed or pearl finish can look beautiful over short natural nails, and chrome French tips or small chrome details can be adapted to the space we have available.
The aim isn't to force your nails to match an inspiration photo exactly – it's to take the part of the design you love and make it work for your own length and shape.
Chrome nails in Paignton and Torbay

Bring your inspiration and we'll work it out together.
Frequently Asked Questions About Chrome Nails
What are chrome nails?
Chrome nails are created by applying a special chrome powder over cured gel product to create a reflective finish. Depending on the base colour and technique, the result can be glazed, pearlescent, metallic or iridescent.
Do chrome nails last as long as gel nails?
Chrome is a finish applied over the underlying nail product, so its wear depends on the manicure underneath, application, your lifestyle and aftercare. Looking after your nails and keeping up with recommended maintenance can help keep the finish looking its best.
Can you have chrome nails over BIAB?
Yes. BIAB and chrome are a popular combination because BIAB can provide structure and support while the chrome creates the reflective finish.
What is the difference between glazed chrome and pearl chrome?
Glazed chrome tends to create a subtle, glossy finish over a soft nude or milky base, while pearl chrome has a more luminous, pearlescent appearance. Both can be adapted to suit your preferred level of shine.
Can you get chrome French tip nails?
Yes. Chrome can be used to create a modern version of a French manicure, with the reflective finish applied to the tips rather than across the entire nail.
Are chrome nails suitable for short nails?
Absolutely. Chrome isn't limited to long nails. A subtle glazed finish, pearl chrome or chrome French tip can look beautiful on shorter natural nails.
How do I look after chrome nails?
Use cuticle oil regularly, avoid picking or peeling the product, wear gloves when cleaning and attend your recommended maintenance appointments. Good aftercare helps protect both the manicure and the natural nail.
