Gel vs BIAB Nails: Which Is Best for You?

One of the most common questions I get in my Torbay nail appointments is:“Should I go for BIAB or gel nails?

The answer really depends on your natural nails, lifestyle, and the look you want. So let’s break it down properly so you can decide confidently.

Hands with manicures: left has light pink BIAB nails and a teardrop ring, right has bright red gel nails and a thin diamond band, on a white background.

What are gel nails?

Gel nails are a soft gel polish applied over your natural nails or extensions. They’re cured under a UV or LED lamp and give a glossy, polished finish.

They’re perfect if you want:

  • A flawless colour finish

  • Short to medium wear time

  • Regular colour changes

  • Lightweight nails

What is BIAB?

BIAB (Builder In A Bottle) is a stronger gel system designed to add structure and strength to your natural nails.

It’s ideal if you want:

  • Longer-lasting nails

  • Natural nail growth support

  • Stronger, more durable finish

  • Fewer chips or breaks

Gel vs BIAB Nails (simple breakdown)

Choose BIAB if:

  • Your nails are weak or break easily

  • You want to grow your natural nails

  • You prefer a long-lasting set

Choose Gel if:

  • You love switching colours often

  • Your nails are already fairly strong

  • You prefer a lighter feel

What I recommend in our Torbay salon

Most of my clients in Paignton and Torbay actually start with BIAB to build strength, then sometimes switch to gel for colour changes once their nails are healthier.

There’s no better option - just the right one for your nails right now.

Can you combine BIAB and gel?

Yes - and this is actually one of my most popular services.

BIAB gives the strength, and gel polish gives the colour. Best of both worlds.

Still unsure?

If you’re not sure which to book, don’t worry - I’ll always assess your nails first and recommend what’s best for you.
