Why Do My Gel Nails Keep Lifting? (Torbay Nail Tech Explains)

If your gel nails keep lifting, peeling, or chipping way too soon, you’re definitely not alone - it’s one of the most common issues I hear from clients coming to me in Torbay.
The good news? It’s usually fixable once you understand what’s actually causing it.

What does “lifting” mean?
Lifting is when the gel polish starts to separate from your natural nail, usually around the cuticle or edges.
It can look like:
Peeling corners
Air pockets under the gel
Chips that quickly spread
The most common reasons gel nails lift
In my experience, there are five main reasons that your gel manicure could be lifting, Let's list them out...
1. Improper nail prep
This is the biggest cause.
If the natural nail isn’t prepped correctly (cuticles, oils, surface), the gel simply won’t bond properly. This is why professional prep matters so much.
2. Natural nail oils
Some people naturally have oilier nail beds, which can affect how well gel adheres.
A good nail tech will adjust prep and products accordingly.
3. Using your nails as tools
Opening cans, picking labels, tapping hard surfaces - all of this puts stress on your nails and can cause lifting. Girl, don;t.
4. Water exposure
Constant exposure to water (cleaning, washing up, swimming) can weaken the bond over time.
5. Picking or peeling
Even a tiny bit of picking can break the seal - and once that happens, lifting spreads quickly.
How I prevent lifting in our Torbay salon
When you come to me at Southern Strands, I focus heavily on prep and technique, including:
Thorough cuticle work
Proper nail plate prep
High-quality products
Tailored application based on your nail type
It’s not just about making your nails look good - it’s about making them last.
Is BIAB better if your gel keeps lifting?
If your natural nails are weak or flexible, BIAB adds structure and strength, which can significantly reduce lifting compared to standard gel polish.
