How Long Do BIAB Nails Actually Last?

If you're thinking about getting BIAB nails, there's probably one question pretty high on your list:
How long do BIAB nails actually last?
For many of my clients, BIAB appointments are typically spaced around 2–3 weeks apart, although how your own set wears will depend on your natural nail growth, lifestyle, aftercare and the condition of the manicure as it grows out.
You might see people online claiming their BIAB lasted four or even five weeks – but being able to keep a set on for that long doesn't necessarily mean you should.
So, let's look at what actually affects BIAB longevity, how often I recommend maintenance and what you can do to look after your nails between appointments. 💅
How long should BIAB nails last?
BIAB can often wear well for several weeks, but there's an important difference between a manicure still being attached to your nails and it being ready for maintenance.
As your natural nails grow, the BIAB grows out with them. That means the position of the product gradually moves further away from the cuticle and the structure of the manicure changes.
So while somebody might say, “My BIAB lasted four weeks!”, that doesn't automatically mean four weeks should become your regular appointment schedule.
For many clients, I recommend maintenance around every 2–3 weeks, but I'll base that on your individual nail growth and how your set is wearing rather than applying exactly the same timetable to everybody.
What affects how long BIAB lasts?
Two clients can have the same treatment and experience completely different wear. That's because retention isn't determined by the product alone.
Some of the biggest factors include:
Your natural nail growth: Faster-growing nails will show regrowth sooner and may need more frequent maintenance.
Your natural nails: Everyone's nails are different, and their flexibility, condition and individual characteristics can influence how a product wears.
Your lifestyle: Jobs, hobbies and everyday activities that put more stress on your hands can affect your manicure.
Water exposure: Regular or prolonged exposure to water can contribute to wear, particularly when combined with cleaning products or physical work.
Aftercare: How you treat your nails between appointments matters. Picking, peeling and using your nails as tools definitely won't help!
Application and preparation: Correct preparation and professional application play an important role in retention.
Maintenance: Leaving a set considerably longer than recommended allows more regrowth and changes the balance of the manicure.
That's why I pay attention to how your nails behave rather than promising every client exactly the same number of weeks.
How do I know when my BIAB needs maintenance?
Don't rely entirely on the calendar. Your nails will usually give you some clues that it's time for your next appointment.
Look out for:
Noticeable regrowth around the cuticle
Changes to the balance or shape of the nail as it grows
Lifting around the edges of the product
Cracks, chips or damage
A nail becoming uncomfortable
Your natural length becoming impractical for your lifestyle

Can BIAB last four weeks?
It can – some clients may still have their BIAB intact after four weeks.
But I wouldn't use that as a target.
The longer your natural nail grows, the further the original structure of the manicure moves away from where it was first applied. Your nails may also become longer than is practical for your lifestyle.
That's why I'd rather recommend a maintenance schedule based on your nail growth and how your BIAB is wearing than encourage you to stretch every set as long as physically possible.
Good retention isn't a competition to see who can go the longest between appointments. 💅
How can I make my BIAB last longer?
What happens after you leave the salon matters too.
A few simple habits can help you look after your manicure between appointments:
Use cuticle oil regularly
Wear gloves for cleaning and household jobs
Avoid using your nails to open cans, scrape labels or prise things apart
Don't pick or peel at the product
Be mindful of repeated or prolonged water exposure
Book your maintenance appointments at the interval recommended for your nails

Does going on holiday affect BIAB longevity?
Your normal routine can change quite dramatically on holiday – think swimming pools, sea water, sunscreen, suitcases and spending much more time in and around water.
That doesn't mean your BIAB is destined to lift the moment you reach the pool! But it does make good aftercare particularly useful.
