Bright vs Neutral Nails: What’s Trending For Summer 2026?

Every summer, I notice the same divide appearing at the nail desk.
On one side, I've got the clients arriving with screenshots full of hot pink, bright orange, colourful French tips and nail art that could probably be spotted from space.
On the other, I've got the neutral girlies.
Milky whites. Soft pinks. Nude BIAB. Clean French tips. Nails designed to go with absolutely everything.
And this summer, I'm seeing plenty of both at our salon in Paignton.
So if you're stuck between joining Team Bright and keeping things neutral, let's look at what I'm actually seeing among my Torbay clients – and how to work out which summer manicure suits you. ☀️💅
Bright nails are having a very good summer
Once holiday and festival season arrives, the colour requests at my nail desk definitely start getting brighter.
Some of the shades I'm seeing – and loving – for summer include:
Hot pink
Coral
Electric blue
Bright orange
Lemon yellow
Lime green
And bright doesn't necessarily mean covering every nail in neon.
Colourful French tips, one or two feature nails or bright nail art over a neutral base can give you that summer feeling without committing to ten statement nails.
If you usually play it safe, summer can be a very good excuse to finally choose that colour you keep looking at and then putting back.
Why clients love bright nails
Bright nails are ideal if you:
Love standing out
Enjoy experimenting with trends
Want something playful
Have holidays planned
They also look incredible in photographs, especially against sun-kissed skin.
For many clients, summer feels like the perfect excuse to wear colours they wouldn’t normally choose during the rest of the year.
Neutral nails aren't going anywhere either
At the other end of the summer nail spectrum, neutral shades are still a regular request at my nail desk.
Think:
Milky white
Soft pink
Nude beige
Sheer peach
Natural BIAB shades
The big appeal is versatility.
If you've got work on Monday, dinner on Friday and a wedding at the weekend, a neutral manicure can move between all three without you having to think about whether your nails work with what you're wearing.
Lighter and more natural-looking shades can also make regrowth less visually obvious than some stronger colours.
That doesn't mean the manicure itself suddenly needs less maintenance – your natural nails are still growing underneath – but it can make the grow-out feel a little more subtle.
Why the natural nail look is still so popular
You've probably seen the “clean girl” nail aesthetic online – natural-looking lengths, glossy finishes, soft neutral shades and minimal nail art.
Whatever we call it, the actual look remains popular with clients who want something polished without lots of colour or detail.
BIAB **can** work particularly well for this style when additional structure is appropriate for your natural nails, and we can finish it with a natural shade, soft colour or minimal design.
But you don't need BIAB simply because you want neutral nails.
The treatment and the colour are two separate decisions.

Can't decide? Mix bright and neutral
Here's the secret third option:

Some of my favourite summer sets sit somewhere between bright and neutral.
You could try:
A nude base with colourful French tips
Neutral BIAB with bright nail art
Milky white with chrome accents
Soft pink with colourful details
One or two bright feature nails
A neutral French manicure with a coloured twist
This is particularly good if you normally wear neutral nails but fancy experimenting without jumping straight from pale pink to fluorescent lime.

Choose bright nails if...
You want your nails to be part of the outfit rather than simply go with it. Bright colours are brilliant for holidays, festivals and anyone who enjoys making their manicure a little more noticeable.
Choose neutral nails if...
You want something versatile that works easily with different outfits, events and everyday life. Soft shades are also a good option if you prefer your regrowth to look less obvious.
Mix the two if...
You love the clean look of a neutral base but keep getting distracted by colourful designs. A bright French tip or small piece of nail art gives you both.

Don't choose your manicure from a checklist.

The interesting thing is that my clients aren't neatly dividing themselves into “bright” and “neutral” camps anyway.
More often, we're taking bits from different looks and adapting them.
A neutral client adds a pink French tip.
Someone who normally wants full colour suddenly chooses milky white.
A simple BIAB set gets one tiny piece of nail art.
That's why trends are best treated as inspiration rather than instructions.
The best summer manicure isn't necessarily the one everybody else is wearing.
It's the one you're going to keep looking at for the next couple of weeks thinking:
