Why Torbay Clients Are Choosing BIAB Nails Over Acrylic

Over the past couple of years, I've noticed a real shift in what clients are asking for in my Torbay salon - and BIAB nails are right at the centre of it.

More clients are coming to me wanting to grow their natural nails, keep their manicure looking natural and find something that fits comfortably into everyday life. That's led plenty of them to ask whether they should swap their acrylics for BIAB.

But BIAB isn't simply "better acrylic", and acrylic certainly hasn't become a bad nail treatment. They're different systems suited to different nails, lifestyles and goals.

So why are so many of my Torbay clients choosing BIAB - and how do you know whether you should too? Let's break it down.

What are acrylic nails?

Acrylic is an enhancement system created by combining a liquid monomer and acrylic powder. The product is applied over the natural nail or used to create extensions before being shaped and finished.

Acrylic is particularly useful when a client wants additional length, strong structure or more dramatic shapes that may not be achievable with their natural nails alone.

That's important, because acrylic hasn't suddenly become a "bad" option just because BIAB has grown in popularity. For the right client and the right set, acrylic can still be exactly what I'd recommend.

So, What Makes BIAB Different?

BIAB - short for Builder In A Bottle - is a type of builder gel that can be used to add structure to the natural nail.

Rather than automatically creating lots of additional length, BIAB is particularly popular with clients who want to work with their natural nails, giving them additional structure as they grow.

That makes it a great fit for the kind of manicure many of my Torbay clients are now asking for: natural-looking, practical and strong enough for everyday life.

BIAB can also be finished with gel colour, French tips, chrome or nail art, so choosing a more natural nail system definitely doesn't mean choosing boring nails.

The right question isn't “Which one is better?” It's “Which one is better for my nails and what I want from them?”

Why I'm Seeing More Torbay Clients Choose BIAB

One of the biggest changes I've noticed isn't necessarily about the product itself - it's about what clients want from their nails.

Plenty of my clients in Paignton and across Torbay aren't necessarily looking for maximum length anymore. They want beautiful nails that fit comfortably around work, family, holidays and everyday life.

They still want colour. They still want nail art. And sometimes they absolutely want something bold.

But increasingly, they want to grow and work with their own natural nails rather than automatically adding lots of length.

If you've been wearing acrylics for a while and want to move towards a more natural-looking manicure, BIAB could be a great option. Rather than automatically applying another enhancement, I’ll look at your natural nails and recommend what’s most suitable for them.

In some cases, your nails may be ready for BIAB straight away. In others, we might need to adjust the length or take a slightly different approach while your natural nails grow.

One thing I definitely wouldn't recommend is picking or peeling your acrylics off before your appointment. This can remove layers of the natural nail and leave them thinner or more vulnerable to damage.

Is BIAB Always Better Than Acrylic?

No - and this is where choosing your nail treatment based purely on what's trending can get a little misleading.

BIAB and acrylic are different systems designed to do different things.

BIAB can be a brilliant choice if you want to add structure to your natural nails, encourage your natural length to grow, or prefer a more natural-looking finish.

But there are situations where acrylic may be the more suitable choice.

For example, if you want:

💖 A full set of extensions rather than working primarily with your natural nails

💅 The structure needed for a particular style or design

…acrylic may be the option I recommend.

That's why I don't believe there's one nail treatment that's automatically "best".

Sometimes that'll be BIAB.
