Gel X nails: Everything you need to know before booking
If you love the idea of instant length, a lightweight feel and pretty much endless possibilities when it comes to shape and nail art, you’ve probably come across Gel X nails.
They’ve become a seriously popular alternative to traditional nail extensions – and it’s easy to see why.
But what actually are Gel X nails? How are they different from ordinary gel? How are they applied? And, most importantly, are they right for your nails?
As a nail tech in Paignton, I offer full-cover soft-gel extensions at The Nail Fairy, so here’s everything I think you should know before booking your first set.

What are Gel X nails?
Let’s clear up one slightly confusing bit first.
Gel-X® is actually the name of the full-cover soft-gel extension system created by Aprés Nail. Aprés launched its Gel-X system in 2017, and the name has since become widely associated with this style of nail extension.
At The Nail Fairy, I use another professional full-cover soft-gel tip system, rather than genuine Aprés Gel-X®.
So, when I talk about “Gel X nails” in this guide, I’m talking about the type of extension many clients know by that name: a pre-shaped, full-cover soft-gel tip that covers the natural nail and adds instant length and shape.
Unlike an extension that has to be completely sculpted from scratch, the shape and much of the structure are already built into the tip.
Once applied, they can be shaped and finished with your chosen colour and nail art.
And yes – you can still go completely extra.
How do Gel X nails work?
Think of a full-cover soft-gel tip as an extension shaped like an entire nail.
I choose a tip that correctly fits your individual natural nail from sidewall to sidewall. It's then prepared and attached to your natural nail using a compatible gel system before being cured under the appropriate lamp.
The result is an extension that gives you length, shape and structure immediately, rather than building all three from scratch.
The fit matters, though.
A tip shouldn't simply be forced onto a nail that doesn't naturally suit its shape. Your natural nail's width and curvature need to work with the extension so it can sit correctly.
That's one reason professional application involves a little more than finding ten tips that look roughly the right size and sticking them on.

How are Gel X nails applied?
Your appointment starts with preparation.
I'll push back the cuticle area, clean the nail plate and gently remove the surface shine. The aim isn't to aggressively file your natural nails – we're creating the right surface for the system to adhere to.
The basic process then looks like this:
Prep the natural nails – the nail plate is cleaned, lightly buffed and prepared for application.
Size the extensions – each full-cover tip is individually matched to your nail so it fits correctly from sidewall to sidewall.
Prepare the tips – the contact area on the inside of each tip is prepared to help create a secure bond.
Apply the gel system – the natural nail and extension are prepared using the appropriate products for the system.
Attach each extension – the tip is carefully positioned and applied while avoiding trapped air.
Cure – the extensions are cured using the appropriate lamp and curing process for the products being used.
Perfect the finish – I'll make any final adjustments before we move on to colour and nail art.
Then comes the fun bit.
Shape, length, colour, French tips, chrome, cat-eye, detailed nail art – your finished set can be completely customised.
What do Gel X nails feel like?
One of the reasons clients love full-cover soft-gel extensions is that they can feel lightweight and flexible compared with a more rigid extension system.
You're still getting additional length and structure, but without necessarily feeling like you've got a particularly heavy nail enhancement on your fingers.
That makes them a lovely option if you want extensions but prefer a lighter feel.

Who are Gel X extensions suitable for?
There's no single nail treatment that's automatically right for everyone.
Full-cover soft-gel extensions can be particularly suited to someone who:
wants instant additional length
likes a lightweight, flexible feel
wants a consistent shape across all ten nails
likes changing their length or shape between sets
wants plenty of freedom with colour and nail art
is happy to return for regular professional maintenance and removal
Your natural nails matter too.
The full-cover tip needs to fit the width and curvature of your natural nail without being forced into position or leaving inappropriate gaps.
I assess that as part of choosing the right extensions for you.
Who might Gel X not be suitable for?
There are situations where I might recommend another option.
If your nails are bitten extremely short, for example, there may not be enough natural nail/free edge for the application method I use.
Likewise, if the shape or curvature of your natural nail doesn't work appropriately with the available pre-formed tips, forcing an extension to fit isn't the answer.
And if you have a known allergy to gel nail products or acrylates, that's something we need to take seriously rather than simply trying another gel system.
The right nail service is the one that's right for your nails – not just whichever treatment happens to be trending on TikTok.

How customisable are Gel X nails?
Very.
This is where we get to have fun.
Your Gel X-style extensions can be customised by:
length
shape
colour
finish
French tips
chrome
cat-eye
nail art
charms and other design details where appropriate
So don't think choosing full-cover gel extensions means choosing from a handful of pre-set finished nails.
The tip gives us our extension. What we create on top of it is a completely different decision.
Bring your inspo pics.
How long do Gel X nails last?
A properly applied full-cover soft-gel extension set will typically last around three to four weeks.
For context, Aprés also gives approximately 3–4 weeks as the expected longevity of its genuine Gel-X system when correctly applied.
Some clients may find their extensions remain attached for longer, but that doesn't necessarily mean leaving them indefinitely is a good idea.
Your natural nails continue growing underneath.
As that happens, the extension grows further away from the cuticle and its original structure moves forwards with it. Eventually, you have a significant area of natural nail regrowth and the extension isn't sitting in the same position it was when first applied.
That's why three to four weeks is generally my maintenance window, rather than waiting for your extensions to fall off.

What makes Gel X nails last longer?
Good retention starts in the salon.
Preparation matters enormously. The natural nail needs to be properly cleaned and prepared, each extension needs to fit correctly, and the application should avoid gaps and trapped air.
Correct curing matters too.
But what happens after you leave the salon also makes a difference.
Try to avoid:
using your nails to open cans or packaging
picking stickers or labels with your extensions
excessive exposure to household cleaning chemicals without gloves
picking at any lifting
pulling or peeling an extension if it starts coming away
Basically: your nails are jewels, not tools.
The better you treat them, the better chance they have of making it happily to your next appointment.
Want a little extra help keeping your extensions looking lovely between appointments? I've put together my favourite tips in my guide to how to make your nails last longer.
What happens when Gel X nails grow out?
This is an important difference between full-cover soft-gel extensions and some other nail systems.
At around the three-to-four-week point, I generally remove the existing set and apply a fresh one rather than treating them like a traditional acrylic infill.
I'll assess the existing extensions and your natural nails, reduce the old product appropriately and soak off the remaining soft-gel product before preparing your nails for your next set.
So even if you want exactly the same length, shape and design again, we're essentially starting with a fresh set of extensions.
Fancy something completely different instead?
Even better.

How are Gel X extensions removed?
Please don't pull them off.
I mean it. 👀
Full-cover soft-gel extensions are designed to allow professional soak-off removal.
The existing product is carefully reduced before the remaining soak-off material is softened with acetone and removed without aggressively scraping at the natural nail.
What you don't want to do is find a slightly lifted corner and think:
"I'll just peel this one off…"
Because you can take layers of your natural nail plate with it.
If your extensions need to come off, let me do it properly.
Do Gel X nails damage your natural nails?
This is probably one of the biggest questions clients have about extensions.
Gel X-style extensions shouldn't inherently damage your natural nails when they're appropriately applied, worn and professionally removed.
Problems are much more likely when:
the natural nail is over-filed during preparation
extensions are picked or peeled
lifting is ignored and repeatedly fiddled with
extensions are forcibly removed
removal involves aggressive scraping or filing of the natural nail
During application, only gentle preparation of the natural nail should be required.
And during removal, the aim is to remove the enhancement without unnecessarily removing layers of your natural nail along with it.
Daily cuticle oil is also one of those tiny habits I'll forever nag you about. Your nails and surrounding skin will thank you.

Are Gel X nails safe?
There is one other issue worth understanding, and it's different from physical nail damage.
UV-cured gel nail products can contain (meth)acrylates, and some people can develop an allergic contact dermatitis to these chemicals.
The British Association of Dermatologists says direct skin contact with uncured product can contribute to sensitisation and also warns that insufficient curing can increase the risk
That's why clean application matters.
Gel shouldn't simply be flooded over the surrounding skin, and products should be cured correctly using an appropriate system and lamp.
The FDA similarly notes that infections and allergic reactions can occur with some nail products and recommends following product directions and safety warnings.
If you've previously experienced a reaction to gel or artificial nail products, tell me before your appointment rather than hoping a different extension system will solve it.
How should I prepare for my Gel X appointment?
You don't need an elaborate pre-appointment routine.
In fact, less is better.
Arrive with clean, completely dry nails and avoid soaking your hands or applying heavy lotions immediately beforehand.
I'd also recommend:
avoiding a long bath, swimming or prolonged hand soaking immediately before your appointment
leaving your cuticles alone rather than cutting them yourself
telling me about any previous reactions to nail products
letting me know if your natural nails are damaged, sore or particularly weak
bringing your nail-art inspiration if you've already fallen down a Pinterest rabbit hole
And if you're arriving with an existing set that needs removing, make sure you've booked the correct removal and reapply service so we've got enough appointment time.

Gel X vs acrylic: which should I choose?
I'm deliberately not going to turn this guide into a Gel X vs acrylic showdown, because I've already written an entire guide about exactly that.
The short version?
Full-cover soft-gel extensions can be brilliant if you value a lightweight feel, flexibility and being able to completely change your extensions between sets.
Acrylic offers different advantages, particularly when you want greater rigidity, sculpting or certain more extreme lengths.
Neither automatically wins.
If you're stuck between them, read my Gel X vs acrylic nails guide and I'll help you work out which makes more sense for you.

Gel X nails: FAQs
Are Gel X nails the same as gel nails?
Not quite. A standard gel manicure applies gel colour to your natural nails without necessarily adding length. Full-cover soft-gel extensions use a pre-shaped tip covering the natural nail to create additional length and shape.
Is Gel X the same as soft-gel extensions?
Gel-X® is Aprés Nail's branded full-cover soft-gel extension system. Other manufacturers make their own full-cover soft-gel tip systems too. At The Nail Fairy, I use another professional full-cover soft-gel system rather than genuine Aprés Gel-X®.
How long do Gel X nails last?
Around three to four weeks is a good expectation for a properly applied set, although retention varies between clients and depends on your natural nails, application and how you treat your extensions afterwards. Genuine Aprés Gel-X also gives 3–4 weeks as its typical wear time when correctly applied.
Can you infill Gel X nails?
For the full-cover soft-gel system I offer, I generally remove the existing extensions at the maintenance appointment and apply a fresh set rather than performing a traditional acrylic-style infill.
Can I have nail art on Gel X extensions?
Absolutely. 💅🏻 Your set is fully customisable, including the length, shape, colour and nail art.
Can Gel X nails be short?
Yes. Extensions don't have to mean ridiculously long nails. We can choose a length and shape that suits the look you're going for, provided the tip fits your natural nail correctly.
Can I remove Gel X nails myself?
I'd recommend professional removal. Picking, peeling or forcing extensions from the nail can remove layers of your natural nail plate too.
Are Gel X nails good for bitten nails?
It depends on how short the natural nail is. For the application method I use, there needs to be enough natural nail and a small amount of free edge to appropriately support the extension. If your nails are bitten completely down, another option may be more suitable.
Do Gel X nails damage your nails?
They shouldn't inherently damage your natural nails when appropriately applied, worn and professionally removed. Over-filing, picking, peeling and forceful removal are much more likely to cause physical damage.
How often should I get Gel X nails redone?
I generally recommend returning at around three to four weeks so I can assess the extensions and your natural nails, professionally remove the existing set and apply your fresh extensions.
Ready for your next set?
If full-cover gel extensions sound like your kind of nails, you can book your appointment with me at The Nail Fairy in Paignton.
Choose Full Coverage Gel Extensions if you're starting with bare nails, or Full Coverage Gel Extension and Reapply if you've already got a set that needs removing and replacing.
